Social Networking!

To keep ourselves socially linked in with people, The Shippensburg University Environmental Club has created a twitter in which you will be able to follow us. What our tweets will mainly consist of are updates on what the club is doing and fun green facts.

Even though summer is fast approaching, we want to keep the importance of being green out there for Shippensburg University students and others.

We have also created an open group on Facebook so you can easily communicate with other members of the club.

Both of these social networking site links are listed below:

Earth Day Recap!

This Friday was Earth Day and we are so thankful to say that we put on a very successful event that helped to contribute $225.00 through donations to a local park.
Some of the events that were offered were plain white t-shirts that students were able to then tie-dye. The t-shirts were sold to help achieve our goal of getting a sizeable donation for the park. Everyone loved tie-dying and their shirts which reminded them to RESPECT YOUR MOTHER…EARTH. We also sold eco-bands that were completely made of recyclable materials; the band read “EARTH DAY ROCKS” the theme of this year’s event.
We also had so much participation from other clubs, which we greatly appreciate.  We had clubs selling flowers that could be repotted sold in recycled cans, we had a game set up in which people who came and visited the event could win a gold fish, and our art department ran a pottery wheel by having someone bicycling on it as a means to be greener with powering equipment. They also made soaps and fired their pottery from left over grease from our dining halls. (So cool!)
One of the other activities that students seemed to enjoy was “recyclable bowling” in which we used old plastic bottles of nine pins and a ball completely made from recycled materials as a way to knock them down. It was a lot more difficult than one would have thought but also a lot of fun.
Another cool thing that helped to get students involved in Earth Day was setting up a WHAT SHOULD SHIP DO banner.  This banner allowed students to write what they would like Shippensburg University to do in hopes of being more environmentally friendly or just ideas in general. There were lots of calls for more plant life, trees and bicycle routes. Hopefully some of these ideas will get to be implemented.
We also had a signup sheet for an organic garden on campus. If you are interested in signing this petition, please contact SU Environmental Club and we will put you on the e-mailing list.
One of the things that we were all excited about was the idea of having music at this year’s Earth Day and while the weather permitted us from really exercising this plan, we are so thankful to Krista & Matt who did an excellent job of sticking it out through the weather and performing.
Sadly, the band Dagny Taggart was not able to perform due to the weather at Earth Day but they did stick around to play for some students off campus and it was a highly enjoyable performance so please check them out on Facebook if you get the chance.
All in all, it was a very successful day!
A reminder that our meetings are on Mondays, 8pm, at the McFeelys coffee house. Come join us!

What better way to celebrate Earth Day by introducing our new Environmental Club blog (I know, we’re a little early!) but this is an easy way for us to spread the word about our club and tips we’ve learned about maintaining a green lifestyle.

This first posting will introduce some of the activities that we participate in as a club, information about this coming Earth Day’s event and a preamble into how this blog will hopefully function and what we hope to gain by having a blog.

Introducing Environmental Club (formally known as SEAC)

This club is relatively new to Shippensburg University, especially the name, and operates as a way for students to get together and engage in socially responsible activities while also promoting a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. Not only do we participate in clean ups around Shippensburg (for example: the annual clean up of Burd Run) but also we travel to other Universities to learn about how they are staying green and to learn more about the Environment! Students from all different majors participate in Environmental Club. Our meetings are on Mondays, 8 p.m. at the McFeelys coffee house.

One of the biggest things that the Environmental Club participates is Earth Day! Earth Day is on April 22nd and is a day of nationally recognizing the need to be social responsible and respect mother earth! This year’s theme for Earth Day is “Earth Day ROCKS”…we will be having a number of musical artists perform on campus, while also having engaging activities from all different clubs/organizations that are all environmentally friendly. We will have games, give-aways, tie-dying, eco-bands and recycled pins! This event is a lot of work for the club to put on but it is also one of the most rewarding things that we do as a club. Please come out and support us if you can!

What we hope to gain by having a blog is a way for ease of communication with students of Shippensburg who may be interested in what is going on with the club but can’t make a meeting, or just to high light some of the awesome activities we participate in while promoting being environmentally conscious. Look forward to posts every Monday after the meeting!
